Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris (born October 20, 1964) was an American lawyer, politician, and the current vice president of the United States. She is the first female vice-president as well as the highest-ranking female official in the United States. She is a senator and former senator from California. Harris was born in Oakland, California. She graduated from Howard University as well as the University of California Hastings College of the Law. She began her career in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office prior to being enlisted into the San Francisco District Attorney's Office and then the City Attorney of San Francisco's office. In 2003, she was elected the city's district attorney. In 2010 Harris was appointed Attorney General for California. Harris was elected again in 2014. From 2017 until 2021, Harris was the junior United States senator for California. Harris defeated Loretta Sanchez to become the second African American woman senator and the first South Asian American ever to be elected to the United States Senate. Harris was a senator and was a vocal advocate for reforms to healthcare, federal cannabis de-scheduling, a pathway to citizenship for immigrants who are not legally documented and the DREAM Act, a ban against assault weapons as well as progressive tax reform. Her sharp questioning of Trump officials in Senate hearings has garnered the attention of the nation, including the second Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, who was charged with sexual assault.
